After years of trying, the sudden decline in demand for Ventolin comes as a shock to the entire medical community, with a new study indicating that a new class of medication called salbutamol may be even more effective than the existing one.
“What’s surprising is that despite the recent decline in demand, Ventolin is still the only widely available inhaler that is approved by the FDA,” said Dr. Michael D. Greenblatt, an endocrinologist and researcher at Duke University.
“This is a new class of medicine that does have a better track record, and it’s clear that it is far more affordable.”
In a new report, conducted by the University of Chicago School of Medicine, researchers assessed the cost and benefits of the Ventolin inhaler as it became available, with an estimated annual cost of $1,062,000 for a typical dose of salbutamol. The new study’s results were presented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists conference in San Francisco on June 28.
According to the study, Ventolin is an effective inhaler that delivers medication into the airways, delivering more of it to the lungs than any other medication. Its use is particularly beneficial for patients who have difficulty taking their medication.
“The results of this study highlight the importance of using a drug to treat asthma,” said Dr. Richard D. Schofield, a urology specialist at Duke.
In clinical practice, Ventolin is known as a proair inhaler, which is a type of medication used to prevent exercise-induced pulmonary edema. It is most commonly used for patients with asthma and other conditions that cause difficulty breathing.
A patient with asthma may use the inhaler to help prevent exercise-induced pulmonary edema. Ventolin is also sometimes used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis. But when patients with asthma do not use Ventolin properly, it can cause side effects, such as a sudden and severe drop in blood pressure, which can lead to breathing problems.
“As a result of its long-lasting action, Ventolin may be a good option for many patients with asthma,” Dr. D. Schofield said. “We hope this study will encourage more patients to consider this option, and ultimately allow for more effective treatment options.”
In the study, the researchers examined the effects of a new class of bronchodilators called salbutamol on patients with asthma. They did not find significant differences in the cost of the inhalers when patients were given the new class. But in the study, the researchers found that the cost of the medication rose more than 90% when the brand name inhalers were sold in the United States.
“This study confirms that the benefit of this new drug may outweigh the cost of other medications,” said Dr. Andrew S. Kaminetsky, a urology specialist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
“The results of this study highlight the importance of using a drug to treat asthma,” he said. “The benefits of the Ventolin inhaler may be worth it, and the study also shows that the benefits outweigh the cost of other medications.”
In summary, according to the study, Ventolin is a non-stimulant bronchodilator that delivers medication into the airways. Its use is particularly beneficial for patients with difficulty swallowing pills, particularly when other medications may be causing side effects or for patients who are allergic to salbutamol.
“The benefits of this medication are well-documented, and we believe the findings will be very beneficial for many patients,” said Dr. Daniel F. Fusco, an endocrinologist at Rush University Medical Center.
The study also showed that the treatment is more cost-effective than a single puff. It is possible that the cost of the inhaler is lower than other bronchodilators, including Ventolin, because they are more effective and less likely to cause side effects.
“In this case, the study found a savings of 90%,” Dr. Fusco said. “The difference in the treatment may be worth it, because patients may be more willing to pay for their medication.
